Select a photograph or a series of photographs that you find personally significant. These should be photos of people you know quite well (they can even be photographs of you). Describe the photograph in the essay. If you are writing about more than one, choose one to describe that you think best represents them all. Then address the following questions:
A. What situation was occurring at the time?
B. Who decided to take the photograph and why?
C. Why is this particular photograph significant?
D. Finally, choose one (or more) of the following questions to address with your conclusion:
Do you think the photographs are accurate representations of the moment(s) they depict? Why or why not?
How much should we rely on photographs to capture and carry what’s significant in our lives?
Is the reality of our experiences ever overshadowed by the recording of them?
How do the settings, the purposes, and the people involved affect the representations?
With your drafting work, be sure to describe the photograph (or photographs) for your readers (use specific details and concrete language) so they can “see” it and “experience” it as you do.
