After reading Chapter 8, we will use the criteria from the case study on pages 157-1158. Review the criteria set in Table 8.4 (p. 157) and the history and physical report in Figure 8.5 (p. 158), and compare the patient’s history with the admission criteria to determine whether the patient meets criteria for admission to the hospital. To qualify, the patient must meet at least one criterion in the severity of illness and one criterion in the intensity of service.

  • Prepare an APA-style paper that includes the following elements:

    • Introduction: Why do we need criteria to assess preadmission, care management and discharge processes
    • Body: Identify the criteria that meet requirements for hospital admission (one from the severity of the illness category and one from the intensity of service category).
    • Conclusion: Summarize why the preadmission process is so important, what negative outcomes can happen if patients are not appropriately screened? What are the implications for the hospital (financial or otherwise), for the patient?
  • Minimum length of 2 pages excluding cover page and reference page.
  • List your references in proper APA style, including the textbook

Imagine that the Medical Staff at your hospital (which is part of an integrated health system of network hospitals, a nursing home, multiple physician practices), is purchasing a new, knowledge-based application to be integrated within their organizational EMR. However, during the medical staff meeting, it becomes clear that end-user needs are not clearly defined for the new knowledge-based application.

Instructions

  • Develop a needs assessment for this knowledge-based application and address integration issues and different end-user requirements at the different locations. Your needs assessment should be no longer than three pages. Within your assessment you will need to:

    • Define how you will conduct the needs assessment.
    • Note how will you guide the physicians in defining their end-user needs.
    • Define basic components of how the knowledge-based system should be implemented.
    • Determine who is the best department to manage the knowledge-based system once live.
  • Your assessment form should be in Microsoft Word format.
  • Cite all sources in APA format.

Based on the depth of the information provided, you may have to use the knowledge you’ve gained thus far to make assumptions about the EHR functions. (Tip – Add three columns to the far right of the assessment form, one for each selected vendor)
  • Write a 1-page summary to accompany your assessment form. The summary should include a comparison of the key functions and factors for the EHR.
  • Your assessment form should be in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel format. Your summary should be in Microsoft Word format.
  • Cite all sources in APA format.
  • Submit your assessment form and summary for grading.
