Thanks for submitting your Assignment 3 for English 1101 with TRU-OL. I’ve downloaded it, and I sent you the email below several weeks ago. I have not heard back from you so I am trying you once again at a different email address.

I notice a couple of issues that are going to result in marks loss, so you may want to consider revising your submission.

1. The summaries are meant to be formal paragraph-length summaries in complete sentences as per the model on p.28 of the textbook.

2. The essay is meant to compare and contrast the two source articles using paraphrase and/or quotation from both, and documenting the references with in-text citations and a Works Cited. I’ve only glanced at your paper and noticed that Beyak and Caudron were not cited. You may have a comparative structure, but in case you don’t, here are some more tips on how to set one up:

To structure a comparative essay, you need to come up with terms of comparison and comment on each term as it applies to each item being compared (in this case, each article). See pages 260-261 in the textbook for help with this. An example of three terms of comparison on the Generation X topic might be:

“The authors both discuss the characteristics, the employment potential, and the employment conditions of Generation X.” (For a thesis, you’d want to get more specific–e.g. “Although Caudron and Beyak agree on the characteristics of Generation X, Caudron takes a positive approach towards their employment potential and Beyak takes a cynical approach towards their employment conditions.”

Your three points of comparison will ideally form the basis of body paragraphs in your essay.

Then, you could organize your essay in the ‘slice’ (also called the ‘point-by-point’) method:

1. The characteristics of Generation X

a) Caudron (quote or paraphrase from her article and comment on it.)

b) Beyak (ditto)

2) The employment potential of Gen X

a) Caudron

b) Beyak, etc.

3) The employment conditions of Gen X

a) Caudron

b) Beyak

Of course, the specifics of your thesis and terms of comparison will vary depending on what *you* actually want to say about the two articles and how they interconnect.

Let me know if you would like to revise and resubmit.
